Carter Work Projects | Taylor Thompson’s Builds in Memphis, Edmonton and South Bend
For a week in August of 2016, Taylor Thompson, and his dad, Gary, had the privilege of joining the Carters on their house in Memphis, Tennessee, along with Habitat Ambassadors, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. Taylor had been invited to Memphis as a result of the Austin Habitat house for which he raised $85,000 and helped build in honor of his mom, Maureen, who passed on October 21.2014. The local Austin NBC affiliate, KXAN, told the story:

Thousands of volunteers joined Habitat for Humanity’s 34th Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Canada to build 150 homes in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary. Taylor returned to the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project being hosted in Edmonton, Alberta and Winnipeg, Manitoba in July of 2017. The first day of building kicked off July 10 and continued through July 14. Projects during the week included: 75 homes in Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan, 25 homes in Winnipeg and 50 homes in territories and provinces across Canada.

In August 2018, the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, a milestone 35th build for President and Mrs. Carter, took place in Indiana. The couple worked alongside future homeowners and hundreds of other volunteers to build or improve 41 homes in Mishawaka and South Bend.

Former President Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter demonstrated their commitment to social justice and basic human rights over and over again during their time in the White House, and their resolve has only deepened since moving on, most notably through the Carter Center in Atlanta. They have also worked on numerous Habitat builds both in the United States and around the world alongside diligent volunteers.
In March 1984, President and Mrs. Carter worked with Habitat in Americus, Georgia. This led up to their long-term involvement with Habitat. They quickly realized that Habitat’s mission closely aligned with their values, and a partnership was formed. Just a few months later, in September of that same year, the Carters led a Habitat for Humanity work group to New York, serving 19 families in need of safe, affordable housing. That was the inaugural Carter Work Project, which is now a weeklong event taking place in a different location all over the world each year.
