At ACCA CCAF Madison 2026, Gary was privileged to share with you his movement to collect and preserve the stories behind cancer care — “One Story. One Moment. One Donut at a Time.” In addition to sharing an Entenmann’s powdered donuts, “I was privileged to open my heart on the stage” at the Monona Terrace on Sunday, April 12. Born of his annual tradition taking powdered donuts to special places on the anniversary of his late wife, Maureen’s, passing from metastatic breast cancer on 10.21.2014, Team Powdered Donut™ continues Gary’s promise to honor her. By celebrating the people, stories, and communities that fight cancer every day, your cancer center can be part of that promise.
Gary’s wife Maureen was an architect. She heard the words “you have cancer” on the same day that her license from the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners arrived in late 2003. Years of work to get her Master’s in Architecture, long days at the office as an intern, and numerous exams went into earning that license. Not days before it arrived in the mail, Maureen had a biopsy. Her OBGYN had felt a lump in her right breast when they heard the heartbeat of their youngest with whom she was pregnant at the time. As Maureen opened the envelope, the phone rang. And everything changed. Forever. Like Frank Llloyd Wright, she was actively working until the week before her passing.
